GOLD MEDAL MACHINES
Olympic Organics has long been supplying compost and topsoil products to the homeowners and landscapers of Kitsap County, WA. With their machinery and servicing, Powerscreen of Washington was key to keeping them running year after year. When DTG Recycle acquired the business, the dealer partner continued delivering this gold medal-worthy efficiency.
POWERSCREEN
The largest waste recycling provider in the Pacific Northwest region, DTG Recycle specialises in sustainably processing construction, industrial and manufacturing materials. For many years, Olympic Organics have been turning residential and commercial green and food waste into quality compost from their two facilities in Bremerton and Kingston, WA.
For the waste recycling giant, taking on the local business was a logical step. The acquisition in 2022 allowed them to expand their services into new locations. However, as Jeff Ford, Vice President for Powerscreen of Washington explains, continuing production as usual wasn’t enough for the ambitious DTG team.
“We had a longstanding relationship with the previous owners of Olympic Organics,” he says. “We have found and serviced machinery for them for years. When the DTG team took over, it was clear from the start that maximising production was going to be a priority, something we were more than happy to help with.”
THE PRODUCTION RACE
One of Olympic Organics’ two regional composting facilities is located on the Kitsap Peninsula in Kingston, WA. On this site, yard materials such as prunings, grass clippings and weeds are accepted alongside manure and commercial food waste. This is processed through their state-of-the-art system into sustainable, nutrient-rich compost products which are sold on to local gardeners and businesses.
Robust, powerful machinery is key to recycling this mixed material efficiently and making high-quality products. After helping Olympic Organics with the selection and servicing of this equipment for many years, the Powerscreen team has a thorough understanding of what’s required to keep the business up and running. The dealer partner’s reputation and expertise meant they were the ones DTG turned to first after taking over the site.
As Jeff explains, “DTG has seen huge growth in the last five years. They’ve acquired a few companies in the region and can recycle pretty much anything and everything. They’re proactive in finding new methods of recycling. This ambition was clear when they came to us to upgrade the Kingston site’s process and production. They wanted to screen large amounts of materials and make a high-spec product. So we started to look at how they could increase production.”
HIGH-ENDURANCE MACHINES
At the Kingston facility, the whole composting cycle is completed from end to end. Key machines in these processes are the Terex Ecotec Phoenix 3300 Trommel screener and the MGL 842X Stacking Conveyor. The 842X is used to feed material to and from the screener, while the Phoenix sorts through huge amounts of waste before it goes into compost production.
To make sure the final soil product is of a high quality, this step has to be completed accurately as well as efficiently. The robust grid features are combined with a powerful four-wheel drive system and high-performance friction grip wheels which turn the trommel drum. Specially designed to handle high-volume compost production, this machine has the durability DTG needed to keep the process running.
Alongside this machine’s remote-operated 180’ swivel fines conveyor, the hydraulic-powered fold mechanism and capacity of up to 700 tonnes per hour of the 842X help maximise the system’s productivity. These features also allow the equipment to be quickly adjusted or moved around the site, minimising downtime.
“They’re big machines that can offer big throughput,” says Jeff. “This was of particular benefit to DTG who wanted to bring in materials from other sites. These equipment upgrades meant the system could keep up with this increasing demand without losing any product quality.”
STARTING GUNS TO GROWTH
Since they’ve been delivered by Powerscreen, the machines have significantly enhanced the production of the Kingston site. As Jeff explains, “We’ve had lots of great feedback from the team, they’re very happy with the machine. It’s performed flawlessly since its delivery more than six months ago.”
By offering quality equipment alongside the full support of spare parts and servicing, the Powerscreen team has kept the Kingston site running, even as it has increased production. The DTG team were so impressed they’ve since worked with the dealer to supply a full range of equipment across their sites, including shredders, grinders, screeners and picking stations.
Jeff says, “We look forward to continuing to work with DTG as they increase their coverage and services across the region.”
