CRUSHING THE COMPETITION

As a regional leader in ready-mix concrete and aggregates, Yarrington Road Materials is always looking for new business opportunities. To source and produce all their materials, they need equipment that can keep up with their ambitions. Luckily, their machinery partner Crushing Tigers has the right kit to help them take on new projects and stay ahead of competitors.

Serving the construction businesses of Austin and San Antonio, Texas since 1999, family-owned Yarrington Road Materials has grown into one of the state’s largest suppliers of sand, concrete and rock. Having built up a wealth of experience, their focus on growth matches their dedication to producing consistent, high-quality materials for customers.

With a mission to grow a community-focused business, Yarrington Road’s dealer partner Crushing Tigers is just as driven. Based in Austin, Texas, the market leader and authorised distributor of aggregate machinery has supported local businesses with high-performance equipment sales and rentals, parts and servicing since 2011.

That’s why Yarrington Road came to them to find a kit for a new concrete recycling project. A stockist of the global hydraulic attachment brand Rammer, Crushing Tigers had the perfect tool for the job.

A PULVERISING PROJECT

Having developed an efficient screening plant with Yarrington Road Materials, Crushing Tiger’s Territory Manager for East and South Texas John O’Dwyer was happy to help the team find the right solution for a new opportunity. The redevelopment of San Marcos Airport in Texas involved demolishing buildings, the concrete from which needed to be processed and recycled.

To do this, they needed equipment on site that could take out number three and four rebar from the concrete and crush it ready for further processing. As John explains, “The product is coming onto site in boulders and needs to be broken up into four or five-foot chunks. They needed a tool that would crush it into sizes of 20 to 25 inches ready to feed into their crusher.”

The crushing plant then produces ⅜ inch minus, 57 stone and road base aggregates to repurpose back into the business. For this operation to produce quality material efficiently, John recommended the Rammer RPV40S pulverising attachment to the Yarrington Road team.

He explains why, “The tool has enough force to be efficient. It also has a rebar cutter inside the jaws to break up the material and stop it from going through any other machines. This was the first opportunity to test out the Rammer brand and it's been really successful for them.”

THE TOOL TO SUCCESS

As an expert in rock breaking and demolition, Rammer and their hydraulic attachments are trusted across the construction, demolition, quarry and mining industries. Their durable, quality range, which includes everything from hydraulic breakers to demolition tools, is designed to help maximise productivity and operational reliability.

Yarrington Road Materials have their Rammer RPV40S attachment working on a John Deere 470G Excavator. Able to work on machines weighing 35 tonnes upwards, the pulverising jaw can open more than a metre (45 inches) wide, has a cutting force of up to 3840 kN and a maximum crushing force of 1980 kN. This makes it ideal for breaking down the large blocks of material on the San Marco site.

The cutter inside the Rammer jaws can also break up rebar up to a maximum diameter of 65mm. As a result, all the processing can be done with a single piece of equipment, helping the site to run more efficiently. The durable, hardwearing attachment design also keeps the plant operating smoothly. Manufactured from HB400 steel, the hardened pins, bushings and shielded hydraulic cylinders protect the tool during a whole day’s crushing.

"By using this attachment to process the concrete first, the material we run through our crushers and screeners comes out so much faster...

IT’S OPENED NEW DOORS

For the Yarrington Road Materials team, the introduction of the Rammer RPV40S tool hasn’t just helped them complete the San Marco project efficiently, it has protected their other business assets too.

As Samuel Zavala, Operations Manager for Yarrington Road Materials, explains, “The Rammer pulveriser is efficient and easy to use. Each piece of concrete that goes into its jaws is pulverised, no matter how large it is. I can’t get enough concrete on it to have it work all day because it just goes right through it. By using this attachment to process the concrete first, the material we run through our crushers and screeners comes out so much faster. The production as a whole is a lot better.”

By breaking down the material and removing any rebar before further processing, the demands on existing equipment are reduced. As Liam Og Murray, Sales Engineer for

Crushing Tigers outlines, “It’s a cost-effective way to process material and prevent extra wear on the crusher. This has decreased downtime massively on Yarrington Road’s crushers and screeners.”

Plus, adding this tool to their plant has contributed to business growth. As John adds, “This equipment has given Yarrington Road an advantage in this line of work. Previously, they weren’t able to recycle demolition material, just washout concrete. So having the Rammer attachment available has opened up a whole new avenue for them.”
