THE WOODCRACKER STORY

FROM A SINGLE PIECE TO WORLDWIDE SUCCESS

What started as a simple idea has become an international success story. Werner Steininger originally planned to offer training for 3D design – until a request from his father led him down a completely new path: “Build me a machine that can quickly turn thick logs into firewood.” Said and done: Steininger developed a hydraulic splitting claw that not only impressed on the family farm but soon caused a stir across the entire industry.

The response was overwhelming. A German dealer showcased the device at the Interforst trade fair, and demand exploded. It quickly became clear: what began as a single piece would turn into a production model. In 2005, Steininger founded Westtech Maschinenbau, named his machine Woodcracker®, and launched a success story that now stretches from Upper Austria to South America, New Zealand, and the Siberian taiga.

Machines with Bite. What makes Woodcracker® machines special is their indestructible robustness combined with astonishing simplicity. Whether splitting, cutting, felling, or processing – the product range now covers the entire process chain: from innovative cutting heads and splitting technology to root rakes and stump processing.

The Key to Success? Absolute Customer Focus. Every new model was born out of a practical need. Today, there are Woodcracker® series for excavators from 2.5 to 60 tons. The machines turn standard excavators into powerful forestry machines – an investment equally appreciated by municipalities, landscaping companies, and forestry operations. Unlike expensive specialized harvesters, they stand out for their versatility, cost-effectiveness, and ease of use.

“Made in Austria”is not just a quality label, but a promise. Steininger uncompromisingly prioritizes quality: from the materials and manufacturing to the smallest detail. A Woodcracker® must perform even after days of continuous use in remote areas, without a workshop, without compromise.

Innovation Meets Marketing Power. Alongside technology and quality, strong marketing ensures global recognition. Whether in print, on social media, or YouTube – wherever the machines are shown in action, they leave a lasting impression. Videos of Woodcracker® effortlessly splitting ton-heavy logs have long achieved cult status.

And the journey continues: Westtech is steadily growing, investing in a new 3,000 m² production hall, and continuously expanding its portfolio. Recent innovations include the Woodcracker® C650 tree shear, the compact CS545 grapple saw, and even a feller truck. Particularly, markets in the USA and Russia offer enormous opportunities – places where reliability and robustness matter above all.

From a spontaneous idea emerged a global game-changer. Today, the name Woodcracker® stands worldwide for machines that deliver on their promises: maximum power, absolute quality, and a distinctive character in bright orange.

This year, Westtech celebrates a very special milestone: the company looks back on 20 successful years.

THE RISE OF INNOVATIVE SKID STEER LOADERS
As we navigate the construction landscape of 2025, the international market continues to grapple with challenges such as escalating cost pressures, labour shortages, and the complexities of fixed-bid projects. These factors significantly impact construction equipment manufacturers and owners. However, advancements in construction equipment, particularly smart skid steer loaders, are paving the way for innovative solutions to these challenges. Skid steer loaders, commonly referred to as "skid steers," are compact and versatile machines integral to various construction stages. Their differential steering capabilities provide exceptional manoeuvrability, allowing operators to interchange traditional bucket attachments with specialized tools like augers, cutters, plows, forks, and more. This adaptability enables end users to perform a wide range of tasks efficiently, especially in confined spaces.
